Moonshadows

Long the source of myth and song, shadows made from the light of the moon have more meaning than those made from the sun. Maybe because moon shadows are harder to see at night, and the darkness gives them more mystery. They are tricky to photograph because they move during the long exposures. In this photo, moon shadow retreats toward the lava rock formation off shore as the moonrises leaving the end of the moon shadow more transparent.

This photo was taken late on a moonlit night at Makalai point just outside of Hana, Maui in 1980 using a organic time lapse technique that I developed. It is not a double exposure or photo manipulation and uses only moonlight as a light source. The image is copy of a high res scan of the original 6x7cm medium format transparency.
